Motion Hub in the app
Motion Hub is where people publish the scenes they make. The Motion Hub page in Motion Player lets you browse and search it, download scenes into your library, and see the ones you've published. This page also covers what a scene asks before it plays.
Signing in
Motion works without an account. To download scenes from the Hub, sign in from the Hub page (see Signing in) with a Motion Hub account that owns Motion. If the account doesn't, the page says why, with Get Motion and Check again. Once you have, your name sits at the top right; click it to open your account on the Hub's website.
If you sign this computer out on the Hub's website, Motion notices the next time it opens and asks you to sign in again. Studio's Publish page has Sign out too.
Browsing
Click Motion Hub in the rail. Under it are three views:
- Find: everything on the Hub, or what you search for
- Downloaded: the scenes you've downloaded, with a count
- Published by you: the scenes you've published, once you're signed in
In Find, type in Search Motion Hub at the top and press Enter. The heading becomes Results for what you typed. Show more, under the scenes, loads more.
Order sorts by Newest, Most downloaded or Most liked. The chips narrow what's shown:
| Chip | Shows |
|---|---|
| Any kind | everything |
| Uses sensors | scenes that read sensors |
| Layers only | scenes without scripts or web layers |
| 3D | scenes with 3D in them |
| Under 20 MB | small downloads |
Each scene shows its picture, its name, who made it and its size. Badges on the picture say Moves to sound, Follows the pointer, Has a script, Reads sensors, 3D or Reads the web.
If you searched your own library on Home and nothing matched, Search Motion Hub for what you typed brings the same words here.
If the Hub doesn't answer, the page says so, with Try again.
Downloading a scene
Click Download on a scene. It reads Downloading… while it comes, then a note says it's in your library ("Aurora is in your library"), with Use as wallpaper. Click a scene's picture to see more of it first, with Download, Download and use and Open on Motion Hub.
Downloading a scene only adds it to your library. It doesn't go on a screen, unless you chose Download and use. Open it, look at it running, change its settings, and click Use as wallpaper when you want it. See The library.
A scene you have already shows In library and Use as wallpaper instead. In the library it's under From Motion Hub, and its tile says so.
A scene from the Hub is yours to change: delete it from its page, or open it in Studio. A scene can be up to 100 MB.
Checked twice
Everything on the Hub is checked when it's packed and again when Motion downloads it. A .motion file that's been changed or damaged on the way doesn't come in.
If the Hub takes a scene down after you downloaded it, Motion stops showing it and tells you why.
Open in Motion Player
The Hub's website has Open in Motion Player buttons (on a collection, Open all in Motion Player). They open Motion Player (starting it if it isn't running) and download things into your library:
- A scene comes into your library and opens, ready to look at.
- A collection downloads all its scenes, in its order, and offers Play as a playlist. Click it and Motion makes a playlist with the collection's name and plays it on every screen. Otherwise the scenes sit in your library. See Playlists.
Before anything comes in, Motion asks: Download a scene from Motion Hub?, naming the scene, its maker and its size when it can (for a collection, Download a collection from Motion Hub?; for updates, how many scenes it would update), since a link on any web page could ask it to. Click Download (or Update) to go ahead, or Not now. Only say yes if you've just clicked Open in Motion Player yourself.
Motion only opens links from Motion Hub at motionlive.io. Any other link is refused, so your account is never sent anywhere else.
Updates
When scenes you downloaded have new versions, the Library page on the Hub's website lists them, each with Open in Motion Player, and, when there's more than one, Open all in Motion Player. That downloads the new version of each scene, up to 100 at once. It only updates scenes already in your library: one you've deleted is left out, and if none of them are there, Motion just says there's nothing new, without asking first. Motion says how it went: how many new versions are in your library, and how many were already up to date, withdrawn by the Hub, not in your library, or couldn't be downloaded.
One link downloads 2 GB at most. A collection or an update bigger than that stops there, and Motion says the rest was left out.
New versions come in beside the copies you have, and nothing changes on your screens. Open the new one, check it, and use it when you're ready. Delete the old copy if you don't want it.
Published by you
Published by you lists the scenes you've published to the Hub. Publishing happens in Studio: see Publishing and Sharing scenes.
The Hub's website has more than the app shows: following makers, collections, groups, challenges and your own page. See Following, collections and picks and the pages after it.
Before a scene plays
Some scenes ask for something before they go on a screen. When you click Use as wallpaper on one, Motion shows a sheet first: Before “Name” plays, who made it, where it came from, and what it asks for. Nothing changes until you answer.
Websites
A scene whose script reads a website says It reads a website (or two, three…), over HTTPS, without your sign-ins, and lists each site. For each one, pick:
- Allow: the scene can read it.
- Refuse: it can't, and you won't be asked again.
- Ask later: decide next time.
A scene reaches only the sites it names and you allow. It never reaches this computer or your network.
Answering
Show it, as chosen puts the scene on the screen with your answers. Don't show it leaves everything as it was.
The answers for websites are kept, and you can change them any time in Settings, under Websites scenes reach.
The opened scene already tells you what it reaches before you use it: Reaches lists the websites, and Runs says whether it has a script. The Hub page says the same beside its chips: Scenes with code of their own ask before they run.
